Comfort food can be good for you. You’ll never miss the salt with all these extra spices and seasonings. Tomato sauce provides a boost of antioxidants vitamin A and vitamin C. For extra nutrients and fiber, serve Super Sloppy Joe’s on whole-wheat or whole-grain buns instead of white refined buns.
Makes 6 sandwiches (6 servings, about ½ cup meat mixture per serving)
Ingredients2 teaspoons canola oil1 pound extra-lean ground turkey breast, uncooked1 ⅔ cups onion, chopped1 tablespoon garlic, finely minced1 can (15 ounces) no-salt-added tomato sauce½ cup bottled chili sauce2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce2 tablespoons brown sugar1 teaspoon chili powder½ teaspoon black pepper4-6 drops hot red pepper sauce6 whole-wheat or mixed whole-grain hamburger buns
Directions1. Heat oil in large skillet over medium-high heat.
2. Add turkey, onion and garlic and cook until meat is browned and onion is tender.
3. Stir in tomato sauce and all remaining ingredients.
4. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for five minutes.
5. Serve on whole-wheat hamburger buns.
